The people who built character ai
A small team, six characters, and a stubborn belief that a conversation is worth writing properly.
Why we only made six
It would have been easier to launch character ai with two hundred characters and let people sort it out. We tried that internally and hated it. Everything blurred: the same jokes, the same warmth, the same slightly eager tone in every window.
So we cut it to six and spent months on each one. Luna, Mia, Sofia, Yuki, Camila and Elena have separate voices because separate people wrote them and then argued about them. Elena exists because someone on the team insisted that a companion who never disagrees is not company, she is a mirror.
What character ai is not
It is not therapy, it is not a dating site and it does not pretend the characters are real people. Every photograph here is computer generated and every character is fiction. We say that plainly because the alternative is dishonest, and because it turns out people enjoy the conversation just as much once they know.
The platform is 18+, browser based and free to open. What happens after the first message is between you and whichever character you picked.
